What does it take to be a HEARTist? A genuine interest in the arts. And an opening at our Studio.
HEART has a cap of 25 HEARTists in the Studio, and we are most often at that capacity. (In other words, do not often have room for more HEARTists.) We also do not offer workshops or drop-in classes at this time. However…
If you’re interested in becoming a HEARTist once a spot becomes available,
Here’s the process:
Step One:
Attend an Information Session at the HEART Studio.
Note: Information sessions are only scheduled if or when a spot becomes available for a new HEARTist at the Studio.
Both the potential HEARTist and their supporters should attend.
This is your chance, and theirs, to get to know us, ask questions about HEART, and explore our Studio. So everyone can learn more about whether they are ready to commit to that artsy life.
Our Studio is in residence at The Alcove in Park Circle:
HEART Inclusive Arts Community
4951 Jenkins Ave.
North Charleston, SC 29405
Step Two:
If you and your potential HEARTist are still interested in joining us after attending the Info Session, let us know!
Names will be drawn at random to begin trial days at HEART.
Trial Days:
If your name is drawn, you will be offered two trial days at no cost.
This is our time, altogether, to get better acquainted, try out our program, and feel out if HEART is a good fit for everyone.
We want to make sure we are all happy at HEART.

HEART is a multidisciplinary art studio for adults with disabilities.
Our membership is a beautiful diversity of disabilities and has tended toward a majority of neurodiverse adults. Above all, you must truly have a love for the arts.
Together we do visual arts, music, writing, theater, performing arts and more - including outings, community engagement, and live shows.
We don't offer drop-in or short-term classes at this time. So, HEARTists can be with us for years - some have even been with us since day one back in 2014. Which is wonderful for us. But, it does mean it can be hard to know when a spot might become available once we're full.
We have a new process - outlined above - for bringing in new HEARTists.
-
HEART is for adults with Disabilities. We define an “Adult” as someone who is 18+ and no longer attending school. (Because our 9-5 schedule conflicts with the school day.)
We do not have any youth or children’s programs. Though, our public performances welcome everyone if you just want to watch what we do.
-
No. But - you do have to have a genuine interest in the arts. Being good is subjective. But, if you don’t enjoy being creative, then this is a very long and boring day for you.
-
No. We are an independent nonprofit arts organization. We are not an Adult Day Service or Care Program, and therefore do not/can not accept waivers or reimbursements.
-
We have an Interest List that includes everyone who has ever said “I want to join HEART”. So, if a spot becomes open at the Studio, we reach out to everyone on that list. That’s where you’ll find out when an Information Session is scheduled so that you can attend.
So, we don’t have a wait list per se.
-
HEARTists are in the Studio every Tuesday and Thursday with activities from about 9:30 am - 4:30 pm. Arrival starts at 9 am and pick up (or departure) by 5 pm.
Our Studio operates year round, programming is ongoing (with the exception of a 2 week closure over the winter holidays), and participation is membership based (with membership fees paid monthly).
We are always working toward a project, exhibition, production, or performance of some kind, so membership is for both days a week. We prefer not to have HEARTists join for only half days or one day per week as their permanent schedule. (As you can imagine, its hard to rehearse a show without a full cast.)

Keeping HEART inclusive and accessible means keeping it financially accessible to anyone truly in need.
We offer reduced membership fees, by application.
This is achieved as a revenue loss to HEART. Meaning, we just ask families considering financial assistance to be thoughtful and considerate of their true financial needs.
Potential HEARTists are considered for membership regardless of their ability to pay. Financial Assistance can be applied for after becoming a HEARTist.
