4951 Jenkins Ave. in Park Circle, North Charleston

New North Charleston Hub Brings Together Disability Services, Creative Arts, and Employment Resources Under One Roof

North Charleston, SC  The building at 4951 Jenkins Ave. has long been a haven of care and safety since it first served as an infirmary for GARCO during World War II. It then became the domestic violence counseling center and shelter for My Sister’s House.  Beginning in 2026 and newly dubbed “The Alcove”, it will serve as the home for several Disability-focused organizations.

Opening in January thanks to the efforts of local community advocates and nonprofit organizations, this initiative will offer a variety of services to individuals across the lifespan.  The Alcove will unite five separate entities under one roof, creating a one of a kind environment for connection, creativity, and community growth for people with Disabilities and their supporters.  A fitting addition to the Park Circle area, which is already home to “the World’s largest inclusive playground”.

“This space represents a true labor of love. Built through collaboration, shared vision, and unwavering teamwork. Every organization represented here has long dreamed of a place where they could grow, expand their services, and deepen their impact. Today, that dream becomes a reality. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to come together, and we look forward to serving families across our community with even greater dedication, compassion, and purpose.”- Leaders of “The Alcove”

Building Independence Together (BIT)

BIT is expanding its trauma-informed ABA services to the North Charleston area to meet the growing needs of families whose children have developmental disabilities and high behavioral support needs. The company’s approach centers around compassion, collaboration, and individualized support designed to help each person reach their full potential.

“Expanding Building Independence Together to North Charleston marks an important step toward filling a critical gap for individuals with higher support needs in our community. This new location reflects our commitment to ensuring that every person, regardless of the level of support they require, has access to meaningful opportunities, compassionate care, and a place where they truly belong. We are honored to bring our mission to North Charleston and to partner with families, neighbors, and community leaders as we continue building a more inclusive future together.”

HEART Inclusive Arts Community

Also joining the new building is HEART, a creative arts studio for adult artists with disabilities.  Its “HEARTists” create visual or fine art works, as well as perform original theatrical productions and live concerts together.

“Artistic expression is often viewed as an extra-curricular activity. A non-essential skill. Especially for people with disabilities.  At HEART, we believe creativity,  expression, and individuality are integral components of a thriving, whole life. With HEART, artists can take down those access barriers to fully enjoy the arts from all angles.  Here, we’re seen visible alongside other wonderful organizations providing important aspects of a rewarding, fulfilled life - like employment and advocacy.”  Sierra Garland, Executive Director of HEART Inclusive Arts Community

The addition of HEART’s vibrant programming brings color, creativity, and connection to the new hub, making it a true space for expression and inclusion.

Be the Change Charleston

Be the Change Charleston will also have a presence in the building, bringing its deep commitment to inclusion and intersectionality. The organization promotes representation and advocacy across all identities and works to ensure that all individuals regardless of background feel welcomed and respected.

“We are excited to join forces and work alongside each other, continuing to learn from each other, & grow together. Our employment program and community outreach at Be the Change will only be strengthened by connecting together with other likeminded agencies in the area.” -Shaina Bermudez, Cofounder & President of Be the Change Charleston

Beyond Employment Initiative

Rounding out this collaborative space is the Beyond Employment Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities gain and maintain meaningful employment.

The initiative provides scholarships to individuals with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities, addressing not just job training needs, but also the financial and practical barriers that often stand in the way of long-term employment success.

“Employment is one of the biggest steps toward independence and dignity,” said Ryan Sadis, VP of Beyond Employment Initiative. “We’re here to make that step more accessible for everyone.”
